Update: Our flight says Operations next to it on the board. We ran into someone on our flight, and he said that all week they’ve been delaying one flight for four hours from Rome so they can work on construction, and of all flights, ours got hit. We now leave at 10:20 pm and are missing a day in Matera.
Wow! Life is teaching me to be patient. This travel disaster has gotten so bad that I can finally only laugh. Last night we got into Chicago at 11:30 pm (after getting on and off plane three or four times). Chicago had horrible storms and tornadoes, so they would not let flights land. We were SO HAPPY we got our bags off. We had to stay at a hotel 20 miles away because all the hotels were booked, and many people were sleeping on blue cots set up under the bright lights.
We made a new friend, Rachel, and she stayed with us in our room on a pull-out couch. It was the last room! This morning we went for a walk in a park across the street. We were in Lisle/Naperville, the true exburbs of Chicago. When we got to the airport for a 6:20 pm flight, it was delayed FOUR more hours. We got here at 2:30 pm for Rachel’s earlier flight. She was flying from Madrid but scored on a direct American flight. We had no such luck for us, and are rearranging all our plans AGAIN.
Caroline is having a wonderful time in Rome. She LOVES our apartment, especially the terrace, and she had a great time at the dinner party. They ate appetizers at the apartment and then went out to a restaurant celebration (one of the hostess’s friends). Caroline met many people and felt like a native Roman. Barbara was going to make us lunch tomorrow, but now we won’t get in to central Rome until 3 pm.
I am thankful that Caroline at least got to enjoy my wonderful plans for Rome. We will now lose a day also in Matera. When I post again, it will be from Italy, or you will not hear from me!
