After sleeping maybe two hours on the flight over, we were greeted by a driver, and I practiced speaking Italian with him. Like most Italians, he became my teacher, gently correcting my mistakes. Stefano met us at the apartment, and it is in the ideal location: Via Montevecchio, a quiet, narrow street off of Via dei Coronari, about a five minute stroll from Piazza Navona.
In our jet-lagged state, we walked around the neighborhood, ate lunch, walked over to Piazza Navona and the Piazza with the Pantheon. We also walked over to where we stayed as a family in 2005 and took photos in front of its wonderful door.
We then took a pausa, the nap all Italians take in the middle of the day. Oh, one thing our apartment doesn’t have is air conditioning. Forgot that, but we slept fine in the heat of the afternoon. Now that it’s cooler we will wander in the other direction, toward Campo dei Fiori and over the Ponte Sisto into Trastevere.
Questa sera: Tonight we went for a walk through Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Faranese, across the Ponte Sisto, and all around Trastevere and the Piazza Santa Maria de Trastevere, and then up a bluff to a huge fountain and a panoramic view of the city. Oh, and gelato for the walk home.
